A wild card is an unknown or unpredictable factor that plays into a situation. You are often caught by complete surprise, and must muster up all of your senses and skills to face it head on. Wild cards can be sneaky, silly, exciting, and even nerve-wracking. Some work out in your favour, and others demand perseverance and resilience. One thing is always true: drawing era a wild card is always out of your hands.
So why have a whole term of wild cards? So much of the acting industry is unpredictable! You may be dealt a desired outcome one week, and be thrown a complete curveball the next. No matter how organized you are, or how well you plan out your acting journey, there will always be a twist you didn’t expect. An opportunity in the form of a surprise. And the actors that are ready to embrace the unknown rise to the top. So this Spring, we are tackling a term full of eight wild cards to keep us on our acting toes. We are our students' biggest fans; we love seeing them perform and use their skills. At L.S.A., we tell our students that taking videos and pictures of yourself in performance or while practicing is a great tool to go back and reflect on your abilities. However, we hold a strong stance on maintaining a respectful environment, and to that end, no recording of full classes is permitted at LeBlanc.
Parents may only record their child during class when it is their turn to perform, and they hear the word "Action!" and stop when they hear the word "Cut!". Feedback and instruction are not to be filmed and shared.
Our school is built on our unique approach to teaching, and many of the techniques we share in class are exclusive to LeBlanc. We believe that all our students learn in a safe, comfortable, and engaging way. By doing so, our students have an atmosphere for optimal learning and skill retention!
Although we all know you are online learning professionals at this point, we just want to make sure everyone is in the loop with our key virtual acting class etiquette:
Our class time is valuable, and we want to make sure our students have conducive learning environments and are ready when the clock strikes. To ensure our students have the best experience possible, LeBlanc School of Acting has a strict 'Late Policy'.
Our Late Policy means that if you are more than 10 minutes late, you will unfortunately not be allowed to participate in class and will not be let in from the Zoom waiting room.
At LeBlanc, we work hard to create exciting class plans coordinated to class time. By being late, our students lose out on key elements and education while disrupting the class flow and learning of others.
Our team is always open to working with unexpected schedule changes or appointments; they just need to be made aware ahead of time. If your child will be late, please email admin@leblancschool.com to let us know in advance.

WEEK 4: THE LIP-SYNC TEST
Mouthing messages must still be motivated!
It’s Performance Week!
This week, you’ll be performing a scene audition-style. Read on for required prep and your script.
We cannot believe it’s already been four weeks, and we are halfway through the Spring term. Yes, we’ll say it…it’s WILD! We couldn’t be more thrilled with how much you’ve worked and grown, and as we watch those cards shuffling, we can't help but wonder what will be next! Hold on, is the dealer saying something? We can’t quite hear, but their lips are moving, hmm…
Today you are dealt the card of the lip-sync test. That means mouthing words that still need to be readable on camera, even though they aren’t spoken with sound. It’s about to get FUN, LeBlancers!
Why we dealt this card:
This occurs a lot in scripts, and actors struggle with it. How do you mouth words that need to be understood without feeling goofy, or accidentally speaking, or hiding the meaning? Articulation is an actor’s best friend, so this week, we are going to lip-sync our way to success!
In addition to exploring the technique this week, you’ll perform the attached script audition-style. Read on for LeBlanc’s expectations for how to appropriately prepare for class, and play a strong hand for week 4, LeBlancers!
HOW TO PREPARE FOR PERFORMANCE WEEK:
Printing out the script 10 minutes before class is not enough. In order to get the most out of class, please follow the following notes. Preparing for performance week includes some essential components:
1) Learning your lines. You should be comfortable (ideally off-script / memorized) with all of the dialogue;
2) Blocking scene action in a non-distracting, simple way for the camera;
3) Understanding what is happening in the scene, who your character is, and what they want most of all;
4) Dressing to suggest with smart wardrobe choices; and
5) If possible, incorporating all of the techniques you explored throughout Weeks 1-4.
Performance week should be treated the same as an audition. It is unacceptable to be unprepared for performance week.

WEEK 3: Let’s get “Back” to it
Get ready for some physicality!
We hope you’ve had a restful break, LeBlancers, and are ready for more wild cards! We certainly are, as we raise you another card that’s just been dealt.
Today you’ve been dealt the card of let’s get “BACK” to it. What do we mean by that? We’re talking about your back, of course! That's right, your strong muscles and physicality can help or hinder your character and your scene, particularly when it comes to emotions. This week we are exploring the relationship between physical levels and emotion. How does a proud character sit, stand, or move? How about an exhausted character?
Why we dealt this card:
Actors often forget that emotions extend beyond our facial expressions and carry into our physicality and body language. When it comes to a self-tape or audition, many forget that there is still so much to do when you embody a character. How you use your physicality can actually heighten the emotion. So this week, it’s all about technique and exercises that bring the relationship between physicality and emotions to the front…and back!
Please set yourself up in a space where you can sit, stand, and move with your full body. It’s going to be a fun one, LeBlancers, as we get “back” to the term!

WEEK 2: THE MAZE OF TACTICS
Get ready for an action-packed, fan-TACTIC class!
Welcome back to Week 2, LeBlancers! We’re laying it all on the table with another wild card. Sit back, count the cards, and let’s check out our hand for the week.
Today you’re dealt the card of the maze of tactics. It’s a week that’s about to get action-packed, as we discover what a character does with their behaviour and dialogue to get through the scene with energy and motivation. They use tactics, and wow, are they important!
A tactic is a strategy that a character uses to push them closer to what they want. Do they need to get inside a castle? Maybe they climb a wall, charm a guard, or trick a servant. And the one thing that will always be true when it comes to tactics, is that they will pack a punch with strong action words.
Why we dealt this card:
Actors need strong tactics in order to have strong performances. Exploring tactics is fun, challenging, and shows how impactful a scene has the potential to be. So often, though, actors play it safe. “My character tells a secret”, or “my character asks their friend for a favour”. What about blurts, squeezes out, confesses, or begs, manipulates, negotiates? There are so many exciting and strong words out there, LeBlancers! And this week, we are exploring them in all their glory!
We’ll race you to class and jump into another wild and wonderful week!

WEEK 1: POWERFUL PRESENCE
Show up with confidence and pride!
Welcome to your first week of the Spring term, LeBlancers! The cards are shuffled, and it’s time to play! We can’t wait to see what Week 1, and the entire term, has in store, so let’s get right to it with our first wild card.
Today you’re dealt the card of powerful presence. What does powerful presence mean? It means being incredibly present in the work that is asked of you: whether that’s in class, in the audition room, at a rehearsal, or on set. Being present includes feeling proud of—and confident about—the moment you are in right now. When you are honest about where you are at in your career, you can move forward with positivity and pride. And the bonus? Others see your professionalism and confidence.
Why we dealt this card:
As actors, we need to be positive about our abilities and celebrate where we are at in our acting journey. You may be starting out, many years in, or reaching a crossroads. Wherever you are, showing up with appreciation and determination helps you see how far you’ve come and how far you can still go. So let’s learn how to channel powerful presence in class this week!
In our first class, we’ll be working through engaging and enthusiastic activities that bring out powerful presence. Come prepared to class with a non-distracting space and a lot of creative enthusiasm for the Zoom class. We can’t wait to see you in our first week of the term!

HOLIDAY CLOSURE:
You’ve been going “all in” during the first two weeks of the term, and we couldn’t be more proud, LeBlancers! It’s time to regroup and reshuffle, as we take a short break. Our offices will be closed from Monday, May 11 - Monday, May 18, inclusive, as our Canadian team celebrates the holiday.
We’ll be back with a new hand when we return for class on Tuesday, May 19th.
Have a great break!
